Managing Green House Gases Emissions
Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions management is part of our efforts in climate change mitigation. Extreme weather events such as heatwaves, droughts, heavy rainfall, tropical storms, and flooding, are consequences of the climate change. These events pose direct risks to mining operations.
We continue to strengthen our GHG emissions inventory and monitoring practices to set more measurable reduction targets, develop effective mitigation strategies, and identify opportunities for greater efficiency and innovation.
Across all gold processing activities—from ore crushing to smelting, we are committed to minimizing environmental impacts. Mercury vapor emissions from smelting are reduced through the use of mercury retorts, while cyanide emissions are managed in accordance with the standards of the International Cyanide Management Institute (ICMI). Scrubbers and dust collectors are also used in assay laboratories to ensure air quality remains within environmental standards.
GHG Emissions Reduction Initiatives
As part of our ongoing Continuous Improvement efforts, we continue to enhance efficiency, boost productivity, and better manage our environmental impacts.
Several initiatives have been implemented to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions while improving energy efficiency, including:
-
of electric vehicle (EV) trucks at the Bakan mine
-
Replacement of diesel-powered pumps with electric pumps.
-
Optimization of barren leach solution pumps under a resource-efficient and cleaner production (RECP) framework.
-
Optimization of the leach pad by utilizing gravity for irrigation, thereby significantly reducing the number of pumps required at the Bakan Mine.
-
Relocation of water intake points to higher elevations to enable gravity-fed flow and reduce fuel use at the Lanut Mine
-
Use of solar panels for CCTV, geotechnical and seismic monitoring equipment, and street lighting around mess halls, offices, and canteen
GHG Emissions Volume and Intensity
In 2024, we began calculating GHG emissions. Total GHG emissions in 2024 were recorded at 48,779.27 tons CO2eq/oz. The emission intensity to production was recorded at 0.29 tons CO2eq/oz, calculated based on the operational sites which are the Bakan and Penjom Mine.
