Recognizing the rapidly evolving needs of surrounding communities, PT J Resources Bolaang Mongondow (JRBM) is strengthening its community development approach by making it more strategic, systematic, and measurable.
To support this effort, JRBM organized a series of Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) with government representatives and community stakeholders from the mine's surrounding areas in Bolaang Mongondow Regency, South Bolaang Mongondow Regency, and North Sulawesi Province. The discussions were designed to gather stakeholder input for the company's Community Development Program (PPM) in the Bakan mining area.
Held in Kotamobagu and Manado on 11, 13, and 15 July 2026, the FGDs aimed not only to align JRBM's community development initiatives with regional development priorities, but also with the company's Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) commitments.
Since 2024, JRBM has integrated ESG principles into its business operations. As part of this commitment, the discussions assessed the resilience of the five community livelihood assets—human, physical, natural, social, and financial capital—while validating strategic issues identified through field assessments. The process also ensured that JRBM's ESG initiatives are aligned with development plans at the village, regency, and provincial levels.
Ultimately, the discussions resulted in collaborative action plans involving multiple stakeholders to support sustainable and self-reliant communities in the post-mining era.
During the opening session, Head of External Relations JRBM, Dwi Hendrawan Senobroto, emphasized the importance of stakeholder participation.
"Input from our key stakeholders is essential to ensure that JRBM's community development programs are well-targeted, address the actual needs of communities surrounding our operations, and remain aligned with regional development priorities."
Facilitated by a team of academics and community development practitioners, the FGDs were conducted using the Metaplan method, an interactive approach that encourages active participation. Each participant was invited to write down identified challenges, proposed solutions, and the roles of relevant stakeholders on color-coded cards before discussing them collectively.
The sessions generated a wide range of innovative ideas, including the establishment of human capital development and training centers, the creation of village financial institutions, as well as strategies to increase value-added processing and improve market access for local products.
One of the active participants, Alsyafri U. Kadullah, Assistant I for Government and Social Affairs of the South Bolaang Mongondow Regional Secretariat, expressed his appreciation for the discussion format.
"We are planning to adopt this approach in developing our own regional government work plans because the methodology helps us formulate more structured and practical action plans."
During the provincial-level FGD, JRBM President Director Anang Rizkani Noor shared the company's operational journey while highlighting the objective of the discussions.
"These FGDs are intended to ensure that our community empowerment programs are developed in line with the aspirations of communities surrounding our mining operations and are well aligned with government development programs."
The discussions also received positive feedback from participants representing provincial government agencies.
Budi Miharjo from the North Sulawesi Forestry Office noted that the discussion format encouraged cross-sector collaboration.
"This method broadens our perspective by encouraging every government agency to work together in finding solutions to community challenges. We are becoming more united in terms of ideas and concepts. The next step is ensuring that implementation is integrated, well-planned, and measurable."
Echoing this sentiment, Thresna Anastasia from the North Sulawesi Energy and Mineral Resources Office shared her experience.
"FGDs are usually quite formal and tense, but this session was both engaging and enjoyable."
Through these collaborative discussions, JRBM reaffirms its commitment to developing community programs that are responsive to local needs, aligned with regional development priorities, and supportive of the company's broader ESG agenda. The initiative also strengthens partnerships with government and local stakeholders in creating sustainable social and economic value for communities surrounding the Bakan mining operation.
